Map of the fifty states and their mottos, by Emily Wick. (Via Strange Maps.)
even in state motos, oregon seems to be high.
You can’t read Indiana’s state motto, even on the full-size image. But that’s okay, because it’s intentional — we’re really kind of embarrassed by the “Crossroads of America” thing. Here are some alternate Indiana state motto suggestions I have provided to gubernatorial staff, and also why I’m followed when driving past the mansion on my way to the museum.
- “Your State Has More Teeth”
- “The Cultural Mecca of Bizarro World”
- “Meth! Whoa-oh-oh! Meth!”
- “Y’aint From Around Here, Are You”
- “Where Souls Go To Die”
- “Tolerance and Acceptance” (I had a blood vessel explode in my eye while writing that one.)
What does the one for Michigan’s upper peninsula say? Why does it get its own slogan? Why is the writing so small?
WHY IS TEXAS ALLOWED TO LIE LIKE THAT?
It’s “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.”
NOTHING WITHOUT PROVIDENCE
I love our motto so much. I thought about getting that instead of my 5280 tattoo.
